The Challenge: Getting People to Care About Truck Bed Storage

When I first greenlit the DECKED.com redesign project back in 2022, the challenge wasn't just about "making a better website." Anyone can build a pretty storefront. The real hurdle was taking a product that is inherently tactile, mobile, and complex (i.e. sliding full-bed length drawers for pickup trucks) and making it feel intuitive to a digital-first consumer.

For a brand like DECKED, the stakes were high. We were aiming to modernize a category that was lacking in brand-building, content, and design. We needed customers to instantly know what they were getting, whether it fit their specific truck, and why it was worth the price, or they would continue buying the same truck accessories they’d bought for decades.

To pull this off, we needed more than just a vendor. We needed a team that deeply understood brand, content, and UI/UX and could collaborate on the more complex aspects of vehicle fitment with our internal team. 

That’s why we tapped Verbal+Visual.

The "Aha!" Moment: Elegant Vehicle Fitment

Early in the discovery phase, we hit a turning point. We were looking at how to handle the massive amount of data required to match products to hundreds of vehicle iterations without overwhelming the user.

"One of the key issues we were dealing with was how to work vehicle fitment into a clean UI. To buy a truck accessory, a customer has to select the correct product for their specific truck – i.e. a 5.5’ 2018 F-150. But to buy anything at all, the user needs to be able to do this quickly and cleanly. The V+V team was able to wrap the engineering logic + complexity into a clean UI wrapper that simplified the buying journey for the user while ensuring the correct product was selected. We had been struggling with how to keep the UI clean while processing so much backend data. When they showed us how we could guide a user through compatibility in real-time, we were confident we were taking a strong step forward in eliminating 'fitment anxiety."

Engineering Results at Scale

One of the most impressive aspects of working with V+V was their commitment to the "after." As an agency CEO, I’m always thinking about the day after launch – can the customer’s internal team actually manage and grow this? Will it be impactful? Or just gather dust?

By moving to a modular design system on Shopify Plus, we didn't just get a new look; we unlocked a new level of business performance. Looking back at the data from this era of growth, the impact was undeniable:

  • Scalability: The system helped DECKED continue to scale at a 50% CAGR, proving the site could handle scale without breaking a sweat.
  • Clean Buyer Journey: By cleaning up the UI, we saw a >10% lift in add-to-carts almost immediately.
